Delaware, it's a start. Send those pics!

The Yellow dots indicate the State Record (lb-oz or 00.00 lb), the Red dots are other fin locations that have been revealed to us. They link to Topozone maps that get you in the neighborhood, if not to the exact spot. The Photos name the location the fins were caught (if known). Thanks to Dave D (Osama Bin Bowfin) for this idea.

August 2011, Christiana River

First off, I wish I had seen this 3 years ago haha. But I was doing some searching online and came across this site. So I'll get to the story. In July 2008 I had been fishing this section of river for b@$$ and crappie for years. Took my little brother up there one day with some live shiners hoping to get a nice largemouth. About ten minutes into fishing I noticed a fish cruising the surface, which appeared to be a carp. I thought that's weird, I've never seen a carp eat a minnow. Then al of a sudden it made a beeline for my shiner and I hooked up. Fought for about 15 seconds, and it bit me off. Didn't see it again. Bummed out I went home ate some dinner, and came back. About 15 minutes later, he was back, this time I landed it, and that is the fish you see in the picture. 23 inches, 3 pounds, 6 ounces. Over the course of the next week, I went back and caught 4 more on shiners, and cut bluegill. Biggest I managed was 26 inches, 5 pounds and 4 ounces.

Delaware doesn't recognize the bowfin as a native species, so I was not able to get the state record. I tried a few times in 2009-10 to get it recognized, but the state was unable to pursue my interest due to financial reasons. I have went back every year since, with no luck. Since then, I've read about the bowfin and there have been reports of them caught in previous years, but information is very sketchy. I'd be willing to answer any more questions you'd have in mind, and the site is pretty awesome, thank you for recognizing me! Take care.

From Delaware Online, November 6 2008, "Kevin Weyl caught this 23-inch, three-pound, six-ounce bowfin on a live shiner in the Christiana River." Kevin - drop us line, we'd love to hear the whole story.
